Shopping Alert Notice

Stay Alert While Shopping!

Pickpockets have been active in stores in the Bothasig SAPS Precinct.
They often work in pairs, using distractions to steal wallets, phones, and handbags.

Protect Yourself:
* Keep valuables in zipped or front pockets.
* Don’t leave bags unattended in trolleys.
* Stay aware of people standing too close.

If Targeted:
* Report to store security & SAPS immediately.
* Block your bank card via your app to prevent loss.

Stay safe and shop smart!

Another Shopping Alert doing the rounds is the one operando commonly known as the ‘Devil’s Breath’ whereby victims experience disorientation and blankness while being turned into zombie shoppers. In the incapacitated state the victim can be convinced to disclose ATM PIN numbers, draw money, sign documents, buy items and in the end also getting robbed of jewelry, mobile phone, purse, handbag etc.

When the victim’s distorted perceptions, short memory loss, slurred speech and hallucinations start to subside, they start to experience chills and excessive thirst, usually attributed to someone that experienced a “crash”. They usually also find themselves in a situation where they can’t recall how they got to where they are i.e. in a queue or restaurant or parking area etc.

“Devil’s Breath” is a term commonly used to describe scopolamine, a potent drug derived from plants in the nightshade family, such as the Brugmansia tree (Angel’s Trumpet). While it has legitimate, controlled medical uses, it has gained notoriety for being misused in criminal activities, particularly to incapacitate victims, induce memory loss, and make them highly suggestible.
