They also participate from time to time in visibility patrols with local CPF, street groups, local neighbourhood watches and security firms. If there’s incidents such as fires, accidents or sink holes then you’ll also find the Bothasig SAPS staff and vehicles present.

In the picture below, great teamwork was observed from Bothasig SAPS, the Bothasig CPF, and Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch in their quick response in securing the perimeter of a sinkhole in Steenhoven Street near Bothasig SAPS. Cones were setup and the affected area were cordoned off, while traffic was directed safely pass. The traffic was safely directed for nearly 5 hours until City of Cape Town Water and Sanitation teams arrived to attend to the situation. The swift action of local residents, Community Safety Structures and SAPS prevented serious accidents and damage from occurring.

When there’s a medical incident reported on one of the local WhatsApp Chat Groups then you’ll always see the Police vehicle(s) arrive on the scene to facilitate, coordinate and give legitimacy to the process unfolding.

Who do you call when machine gun fire in the distance sounds like someone knocking on your front door, but you can’t see anyone outside? Bothasig SAPS obviously, as they can be entrusted with “ghost” hunting as well…

SAPS Bothasig’s visible policing, focuses on increasing officer presence to deter crime through patrols, roadblocks, and sector policing, especially with the “Country in Blue” initiative (18:00–06:00). These efforts, which include stop-and-search operations and high-traffic area patrols (e.g., malls), aim to improve safety perception and reduce crime.

Key Aspects of SAPS Visible Policing Patrols:

“Country in Blue” Initiative: Launched to increase visibility, this directive requires all SAPS vehicles to have blue lights on from 18:00 to 06:00 to deter criminals.

Hotspot Policing: Patrols are increasingly tailored to “hot times” and locations, based on crime pattern analyses, such as focusing on weekend evenings to curb violent crimes like murder.

Sector Policing: Police stations divide areas into sectors for better management and closer interaction with community members, utilizing sector vehicles for dedicated patrols.

Specialised Operations: Includes Public Order Policing, Rapid Rail, and specialized task forces aimed at preventing and combating crime.

Community Collaboration: Visible policing relies on partnerships with community police forums and neighborhood watches to enhance safety and effectiveness.

Operational Challenges and Strategies:

Effectiveness Debate: While high visibility is seen as essential, studies suggest it is most effective when guided by a strategic framework rather than just general patrols.

Targeted Policing: With high crime rates, police are concentrating on areas that are most vulnerable, recognizing that a small percentage of police stations often handle a high proportion of serious crimes.

Resource Focus: The Vispol division includes Crime Prevention, Borderline Security, and Specialized Interventions.
